Early CDM, CFPP Career - September/October 2024

Candice Labbe, CDM, CFPP

Name: Candice Labbe, CDM, CFPP

Job Title: Food Service Director

Years as a CDM, CFPP: 3 years

Why do you embark on a career in foodservice as a CDM, CFPP?

After research and finding my passion, it was a perfect fit and no brainer. I love to help residents and I love to make sure that they get the nutritious meals that they need to get.

What ANFP tools have helped you get acclimated in your career?

The tools that helped me a lot were Edge magazine because it keeps you up to date on all the knowledge that you need as a CDM, CFPP. Also, I would honestly, personally say the ACE meeting. You get to collaborate with different CDM, CFPPs, different minds from different backgrounds, and it's just a great time to ask questions and pick the brains of some of the best of the best.

What are you looking forward to most in your new career?

I look forward to mostly being able to mentor. I hope in the next, maybe even seven to ten years, that I'm able to take one of my cooks in my kitchen and show them that a CDM, CFPP is one of great careers to follow and to look into. So, I hope to be able to be a mentor and see where that goes.

What advice would you give other young professionals or those searching to build a new career in the foodservice industry?

I would honestly say questions, questions, questions. Have your pen and paper, have your notes and your phone ready. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Being in the kitchen is tough enough. Being a supervisor is tough enough. You want to be able to have as much knowledge as possible. Talk to your administrator, former CDM, CFPPs, retired CDM, CFPPs, new CDM, CFPPs. It's really important to get as much knowledge as possible. Don't be afraid to ask questions and if you can get a mentor, that's even great. Finding a CDM, CFPP who's been in this business at least over 10 to 15 years that can help you and show you and see different ideas I think would be perfect especially if you're looking in the path of being a CDM, CFPP.
