COVID-19 Emergency Declaration Blanket Waivers for Health Care Providers
Food and Dietetic Services. CMS is waiving the requirement at paragraph 42 CFR §482.28(b)(3), which requires providers to have a current therapeutic diet manual approved by the dietitian and medical staff readily available to all medical, nursing, and food service personnel. Such manuals would not need to be maintained at surge capacity sites. These flexibilities may be implemented as long as they are consistent with a state’s emergency preparedness or pandemic plan. Removing these administrative requirements will allow hospitals to focus more resources on providing direct patient care.

This final rule establishes national emergency preparedness requirements for Medicare- and Medicaid-participating providers and suppliers to plan adequately for both natural and man-made disasters, and coordinate with federal, state, tribal, regional, and local emergency preparedness systems.
Assessing Intake of Food and Dietary Supplements in Older Adults
Dietary assessment in older adults presents many unique problems due to the diversity of health states and capabilities that span the population group. Little is known about dietary intakes, body composition, and nutritional status among individuals 75 and older. The National Academies Food and Nutrition Board hosted a virtual workshop series in spring 2022 intended to provide guidance to researchers and clinicians.
International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI)
The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND), the Association of Nutrition & Foodservice Professionals (ANFP), and the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) support ongoing interprofessional collaborative practice to implement the International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI) since its official launch in May 2019 in the United States. IDDSI is an international collaboration of professionals who developed a standardized framework for labeling texture-modified foods and thickened liquids.
