Food For Thought
Happy New Year! As we look at the remainder of the volunteer year, we have a lot to look forward to. Chapters are already hard at work planning their spring meetings and they will be here before we know it. However, before our spring meetings, we have several exciting events coming up including the 2025 Virtual Winter Workshop, our annual Member Appreciation Week from April 7-11, 2025, and in less than a month, we will celebrate our annual Pride in Foodservice Week from February 3-7, 2025. This year, we are excited to offer chapters a unique opportunity to get involved with a little friendly competition with our Giving Today, Impacting Tomorrow fundraising campaign.
What will the funds help support? Chapters can help raise funds in support of the Foundation’s grant programs and research, advocacy, and other important initiatives.
When will the competition take place? The chapter competition will be held during ANFP’s Pride in Foodservice Week (PIFSW) February 3-7, 2025.
How can we donate? Click here to Donate Now! or at the top of this page to support NFEF with a one-time OR recurring donation. Members can also donate via mobile device safely and securely by texting NFEF to 855.800.4975.
Who can donate? Anyone and everyone can donate! We encourage you to share this opportunity with members, vendors/exhibitors, colleagues, friends and family. This is a great opportunity to tell members about CDM, CFPPs and how you make an impact on the nutrition and foodservice industry.
How does the competition work? The chapter with the highest percentage of members participating as well as the chapter that raises the most money per member will be deemed the winner.
Your chapter will be recognized at the Volunteer Lunch at the Annual Conference & Expo in Bloomington, MN, June 23-26, 2025. (And have bragging rights!)
We hope you’ll join us in raising funds for a great cause and demonstrating your pride in foodservice. ANFP chapters are encouraged to participate and share the available resources on their website, social media platforms, and in communications with their membership. Click here for more information. -

ANFP is celebrating and recognizing holidays/observances and month-long celebrations throughout the year. To learn more about these observances, please visit our Facebook page, DEI webpage, and check out eNews, which will include links to our toolkits and other resources, as well as other significant holidays. This month ANFP proudly recognizes:
Poverty in Awareness Month (January 1-31) – Learn more about poverty in America and ways to increase awareness in your chapter with this toolkit.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (January 20) - Learn more about Dr. King and ways you can honor his legacy within your chapter. -
Food For Thought
Another calendar year is coming to a close. Reflecting on the last few months, we have experienced much change, growth, and learning in our volunteer lives. Chapter leaders have worked hard and adapted to the organization’s changes with grace and professionalism. Our members have also been exposed to some of these changes and relied on chapter leaders for answers and guidance. With all the hard work and determination, chapter leaders deserve to celebrate. We hope you’ll take some time to reflect on the progress you have made and celebrate with your members during the holiday season.
Year in Review – Don’t shy away from sharing your chapter’s success. Share your changes and progress that have taken place throughout the year with members, vendors and industry partners. Perhaps you increased engagement or your membership numbers. Maybe you simplified your registration process or recognized members’ years of service. Whatever it is, it should be acknowledged and celebrated. You may also consider sharing your successes with your supervisor or administrator, demonstrating the many ways you have contributed to the achievements of the chapter and supported the industry.
(Virtual) Holiday Celebrations – Take some time for fun this holiday season. We know our CDM, CFPPs and volunteer leaders are working hard to make the holidays special for residents and customers. So, it’s important to take time to celebrate with your peers and colleagues and do something special for yourselves. Consider a virtual holiday party with members that can include a virtual secret Santa (may require some pre-planning), holiday trivia and games, or an opportunity for members to catch up and discuss holiday plans.
Recognition & Appreciation – The holiday season is also a time for giving and gratitude. Show your appreciation to your staff, members, and residents with various activities for the 12 days of Christmas/Holidays, host a potluck or hot chocolate bar, or write thank you letters or present superlative/’most likely to’ holiday-themed awards.
A big thank you to all of you, our volunteers and chapter leaders! We are grateful for all you do for our organization and our members. The world is a better place because of each of our volunteers. Happy Holidays! -

Food For Thought
Another busy fall season for chapters is in the books. Over half of our ANFP chapters held fall meetings, and many of them incorporated an ethics session as part of their program. Some of our chapters chose to include content on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) to help members meet the ethics CE requirement for their continuing competence goals. Offering DEI related topics to members not only helps to support their organizations and professional development, but it also supports the mission and vision of ANFP and cultivates a welcoming environment. ANFP offers several resources for members as well as chapters to advance the DEI initiative and educate members and encourage them to take action.
DEI Guiding Principles – The ANFP DEI Committee developed a set of guiding principles to support the development of a welcoming environment for our members, industry partners, and colleagues. To learn more about our guiding principles, what they mean for you, and how to apply them, register for our upcoming webinar, taking place on Wednesday, December 4, at 2:00 PM CT. Click here to register.
DEI Toolkits – ANFP offers several toolkits that aim to educate and celebrate various holidays, observances, and cultures. There are toolkits for members to educate themselves, as well as toolkits with actionable items to raise awareness and participate in a cultural movement. Additionally, there are toolkits specific to chapters that offer suggestions on how to incorporate these significant dates and events into your next chapter meeting.
DEI Education – There is a variety of DEI education available to members throughout the year, such as live education at our meetings, CE courses, webinars, as well as at chapter meetings for those that choose to incorporate this topic into their agendas. To learn about our available courses, use our Find CE tool. You can also attend our monthly Leadership Happy Hour calls to learn more about the DEI sessions being offered at chapter meetings. -
Volunteer of the Month
This month we are honoring Richard Hoelzel, FMP, CDM, CFPP of the Idaho (ID) ANFP Chapter.
Richard joined ANFP in 2010 and began volunteering the following year after having attended the Leadership Academy at ACE. While Richard is currently serving as a chapter leader, he started his volunteer career at the National level as a director at large from 2011-2017. He also served as the National treasurer-elect and treasurer in 2018-2019. Following this term, he took a break from his volunteer duties for a short time and returned as a director at large in 2021 and served another three year term. He then began volunteering with the ID chapter where he is currently serving as the president-elect.
As a dedicated volunteer, Richard has made a significant impact on many individual members that are often overlooked. He has sought out these individuals and mentored them by providing guidance in their careers and helping them build their leadership skills and knowledge.
As chapter president-elect, Richard would like to see the West region of the country reinvigorated which can be challenging given it is more sparsely populated (with members). His goal is to work with his employer and circle of influence to increase outreach and inform prospective members (and current members) of the value of ANFP and the credential.
Thank you, Richard! Your generosity as a leader and mentor has positively impacted our members as well as ANFP. We appreciate all you do and have done for ANFP!
We would like to feature you as our next Volunteer of the Month. To nominate yourself (or another volunteer) please email Abigail Solazzo at asolazzo@ANFPonline.org. -

Food For Thought
We hope everyone enjoyed the 2024 Volunteer Appreciation Week! We are very appreciative of each and every one of you and we hope you know your work and contributions do not go unnoticed. Last week, we recognized our volunteers through a variety of ways, including a thank you from staff, a postcard/digital badge, social media kit, and our first-ever Volunteer Yearbook. We also held a special Leadership Happy Hour where we took some time to get to know each other a little better and conducted a team challenge which brought out our volunteers' competitive spirit. While last week’s Leadership Happy Hour was unique in its format, it still allowed us to bring together chapter leaders and volunteers for our monthly call to enjoy one another’s company and learn more about each other. Our monthly calls offer many other benefits as well.
Peer to Peer Networking – Chapter leaders from all over the country come together once a month to discuss their chapter’s activities, chapter management strategies and policies, day to day jobs, and share ideas to help one another with their challenges.
New Ideas for Your Next Meeting – We also hear from chapter leaders about upcoming meetings and ideas for speakers, topics, special/social events, and out-of-the-box ideas to use at your next meeting. They also provide post-meeting updates about what worked well and what did not.
Access to National Leadership – Many of our National Leaders join the call on a regular basis. This is an opportunity to ask questions about organization-wide initiatives and share your membership experience.
Share Your Challenges (and Solutions) in a Safe Space – Leadership Happy Hour also provides chapter leaders a space to share their challenges in a safe, non-judgmental, and supportive environment. National Leaders and your fellow chapter leaders are here to help and often have experience with challenges your chapter is currently facing. By sharing your challenges, you are helping others as well. -
Volunteer of the Month
This month we are honoring Preeti Padmanabhan, CDM, CFPP of the Illinois (IL) ANFP Chapter.
Preeti began her volunteer career in 2021 as the chapter treasurer for the IL ANFP Chapter and continued for the next three years in this role. She is currently serving as the chapter president-elect. Her volunteer experience also extends to serving as a Hindi Language Teacher for the Chinmaya Mission Chicago for two years.
In her role as president-elect with the chapter, Preeti has made a lasting impact on the members as well as the chapter’s finances. She has ensured financial health of the chapter by keeping detailed records of the chapter’s finances which helped maintain stability and transparency, and implemented strategies to reduce spending, enabling the chapter to fund critical initiatives and events and maximize member benefits and chapter growth.
Through her meticulous financial management and improving the health of the chapter, Preeti has built trust and accountability with the IL ANFP members. Her attention to detail and commitment to transparency have strengthened the trust among board members and the broader chapter, enhancing the chapter’s overall reputation.
She has also had the opportunity to guide the chapter’s direction, implementing new ideas and initiatives that align with the evolving needs of members. Through her volunteer experience thus far she has been able to focus on increasing membership participation, fostering a sense of community, and developing programs that enhance professional growth. In her current position, she also plans to explore innovative approaches, such as new educational programs, partnerships, and networking opportunities for the chapter.
Preeti has her sights set on expanding the chapter's membership base by attracting a more diverse range of professionals, including younger members and those from different backgrounds, which can foster new perspectives and ideas. Acting as a mentor she’ll draw on her leadership experience to cultivate future leaders and inspire fellow members within the chapter as well.
Preeti plans to leverage technology to streamline chapter operations, such as virtual events, online networking, and digital resources, which could help increase member engagement and accessibility. She would also like to see the chapter increase the number and variety of educational programs, and leadership training opportunities that would help members stay current with industry trends and advance their careers.
Preeti also plans to develop partnerships with other healthcare and foodservice organizations to promote joint initiatives and broaden the networking opportunities for members. She also intends to strengthen advocacy efforts at both the state and national levels to raise awareness about how the critical role of nutrition and foodservice professionals in healthcare could enhance the profession’s visibility.
She sees these changes as a way to ensure the chapter remains relevant, innovative, and supportive of its members' growth while contributing to the overall mission of ANFP.
Thank you, Preeti for all you do for the IL ANFP Chapter! We are grateful for your dedication, passion, and hard work. Without volunteers like you, we would not be able to enhance the member experience and achieve our goals. Thank you!
We would like to feature you as our next Volunteer of the Month. To nominate yourself (or another volunteer) please email Abigail Solazzo at asolazzo@ANFPonline.org. -

We are on the verge of a busy fall season with many chapter meetings taking place. Chapter leaders have spent the last few months planning, prepping, and promoting their meetings. We know firsthand the time, effort, and dedication that goes into these events (and we are very appreciative!). To provide additional support for our chapter leaders, ANFP is happy to offer Marketing Services that will help ease the burden of creating marketing materials and collateral for your next chapter meeting. In addition to meeting marketing materials, there are other services available upon request.
Promotional Fliers – If you’re looking to grab the attention of prospective attendees or members at your next healthcare show or career day at the local community college, request a promotional flier from our marketing team to help get you started with a template that can be edited to fit your needs.PowerPoint & Newsletter Templates – If you’re looking for a change in your chapter newsletter format/design, or perhaps need a PowerPoint template for your next meeting, the ANFP marketing team has created templates for both, which chapters can choose from and can edit if they so desire or use as is.
Merchandise Giveaway Request – Chapters that wish to produce merchandise as giveaways (merchandise cannot be sold per the affiliate agreement) can request assistance with the logos/images they’d like printed on the merchandise. Marketing can help with the sizing and color and ensure the branding standards are met for production.
Other Services – In addition to the above services, we can also provide assistance with surveys (membership satisfaction and volunteer recruitment) and other graphics/images for pull-up banners and social media profiles/banners.
Bonus: Chapter leaders may also wish to create their own marketing and promotional materials and can do so with the suggested tools included in Tools to Help Manage You Chapter.
(Please note, Marketing Services may deny the request dependent on the scope of the project and time required to complete the request.)

Volunteer of the Month
This month we are honoring Tammie Shroll, CDM, CFPP of the Oklahoma (OK) ANFP Chapter.
Tammie joined ANFP in 1997 and started her volunteer career in 2016 as the chapter treasurer-elect. Following her terms as treasurer-elect and treasurer, she moved into the role of president-elect, then president, where she has served for two years. She is currently serving as the immediate past president as well as a member on the Chapter Leadership Team.In addition to her volunteer roles with OK ANFP, Tammie has also served as the volunteer food coordinator with the Oklahoma Sooners Homeless Veterans Stand Down for 18 years, and the Lawton Fort Sill Homeless Veterans Stand Down for the last nine years, where she also served on the peer review group that inspected facility kitchens. She also served as the chairperson of a nonprofit organization, “Home at Last” that repairs homes for our country’s veterans and their families.
Having held various positions with the chapter for several years, the OK ANFP members have gotten to know Tammie well, and often come to her with their questions and concerns. She is a consistent resource to the membership and is viewed as a trusted advisor to board members.
Looking ahead, Tammie would like to see more engagement from the membership and more members getting involved as volunteers to continue to grow and build a better chapter.
Tammie, thank you for your steadfast dedication and time you have devoted to the chapter and its members! Volunteers like you are why our chapters are one of the great benefits of an ANFP membership. Thank you!
We would like to feature you as our next Volunteer of the Month. To nominate yourself (or another volunteer) please email Abigail Solazzo at asolazzo@ANFPonline.org.
